Leadership Development

Leadership Development

Waco is experiencing an extraordinary period of growth, development and optimism; the results are being seen across the community in many sectors. This growth is made possible because of the great leadership exhibited by those holding public office, executing public and private policies, managing local businesses, and volunteering in the nonprofit sector. In order to help sustain this momentum and maximize our collective potential, Waco Foundation's Board of Trustees is supporting an effort to encourage, promote, and enhance leadership development opportunities by participating in and providing staff and funding to a central community leadership initiative, Today's Action Tomorrow's Leaders. This effort is a product of the Community Visioning Process and falls under the goal "engage leaders."

Today’s Action Tomorrow’s Leaders is an effort to evaluate community pathways to leadership and ensure that there are ample opportunities for training and service which adequately prepare citizens for leadership. The program augments the work of existing programs, such as the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Waco. It is managed by a steering committee and supported by the Cooper and Waco Foundations, the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, the Waco Leadership Forum and other vital players in our community.

In 2011, Today’s Action Tomorrow’s Leaders began implementing LeadershipPlenty®, a well-proven leadership skills development program offered by the nationally recognized Pew Partnership for Civic Change, Inc. LeadershipPlenty® trains individuals to serve as certified facilitators who, in turn, deliver a powerful 10 session course that is designed to help our community engage a diverse pool of local citizens in civic and community leadership.

Our Community has been blessed with generations of dedicated and effective leaders. Today we are fortunate to have a diverse pool of trained and capable leaders but we need to take thoughtful and intentional steps to prepare to meet tomorrow’s needs for community, civic, business, and political leadership.

As our world evolves and increases in complexity, the need for effective local leaders threatens to outstrip the supply. The goal of Today’s Action – Tomorrow’s Leaders (TATL) is to identify and implement community-wide processes that will complement and expand the existing approaches to developing new generations of diverse and effective leaders.
