The story of Dr. George Jurek is one of vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to serving the Waco community, where he left a lasting legacy through his career in dental care, whole-person care philosophy, mental health care and philanthropic giving.

During his lifetime, Dr. Jurek studied social work, dentistry, and public health, cultivated a love and talent for music and was a coveted dance partner, among many other skills. He worked his whole life to improve the health and wellness, both physically and mentally, of people across the state of Texas.

Dr. Jurek often shared the story that led him into dentistry. He talked about a toothache that went on for several days and the $1 his parents gave him to go see a dentist. He walked to downtown Waco and found a dentist who was willing to help. He reported he was such a good patient that when he paid his $1 the dentist gave him 10 cents back in change, even though the procedure cost much more than $1. Dr. Jurek knew then that he would help people by going into dentistry.

The story of Dr. Jurek is profoundly moving, showcasing how one act of kindness can ripple through a lifetime. His journey is not only one of extraordinary philanthropic giving, but also a testament to the enduring power of compassion. Dr. Jurek carried the lessons of that childhood moment into his career, dedicating himself to serving patients, advancing dental education, and championing the integration of dental care with behavioral health and whole-person care.

His commitment to these ideals shaped his legacy in the field. Dr. Jurek gave $1 million to the Waco Family Medicine’s building campaign to build the dental health clinic. He also established a dental health fund at Waco Foundation, connecting patients with behavioral health needs – served through Behavioral Health Network (BHN, formerly MHMR) – to essential dental care at Waco Family Medicine.

Dr. Jurek’s generosity extended beyond his lifetime, as he carefully planned his estate to continue serving the community he loved. He accumulated a number of annuities over the years and wanted to use them to further his charitable goals.  By naming Waco Foundation as the beneficiary of his annuities, Dr. Jurek ensured his $4 million estate would seamlessly support local nonprofits in perpetuity.

Waco Foundation often handles the sometimes complicated and time-consuming administration of planned gifts on behalf of local nonprofits. Dr. Jurek was able to simplify his plans by naming one beneficiary, Waco Foundation, and leaving instructions with the Foundation for how he wanted his gift allocated. Waco Foundation handles the paperwork, logistics, and distribution of the funds per Dr. Jurek’s wishes, alleviating the administrative burden for the nonprofits.

This type of planned gift is an integral piece of our mission, and Dr. Jurek’s story and involvement with Waco Foundation is an example of how the Foundation can help donors leave a legacy for local charity. May Dr. Jurek’s life remind us of the profound difference one individual can make, and inspire us to live with compassion, generosity, and commitment to our personal mission.
