In the 2023-2024 academic year, Duncan Scholars made significant strides in positive student outcomes at McLennan Community College (MCC) and Waco ISD through the program’s dedicated interventions and support systems.

As a quick reminder, Duncan Scholars is committed to:

  • Reducing Student Debt: By providing financial assistance and emergency grants.
  • Improving College Completion Rates: Through personalized support and resources.
  • Identifying Barriers to Success: Addressing challenges such as mental health, transportation, and academic readiness.
  • Providing High-Quality Interventions: Ensuring students receive the necessary support to thrive academically and personally.

To support these goals, Duncan Scholars provides the following services:

  • 1:1 Student Support: Students meet with Duncan Scholars staff at least twice per semester for personalized guidance.
  • Scholarships:  Students participating in Duncan Scholars attend MCC at no cost, and are eligible to apply for full-tuition scholarships at Texas Tech and Tarleton through the University Center, and Baylor University.  
  • Emergency Funds: Participants have access to funds to help with housing, transportation, food and medical issues to ensure they can continue their education.
  • Group Supports: Information sessions on various topics to help students navigate their academic journey.
  • Building Community: Retreats, study groups, and social events to foster meaningful relationships among scholars.
  • College and Career Prep: Customized checklists to ensure students are prepared for their next steps.

The first-time in college retention rate (FTIC) for Duncan Scholars at McLennan Community College was 81% for last school year- meaning 81% of participants continued to their second year of college.  Compared to the Texas State average of 62% FTIC retention rate, Duncan Scholars believes the additional supports provided by the program directly impact the success of students reaching post-secondary credentials and degrees.

In the first year of the cohort attending MCC, a wide range of more than 58 barriers were reported to Duncan Scholars staff. The three top barriers included transportation, academic preparedness and mental health. For the 2023-2024 school year, Duncan Scholars assisted in the facilitation of $7,155 emergency grants and dozens of interventions to help students stay on the path to graduation.  

Duncan Scholars is now in its third year, proudly supporting 69 students at MCC and 67 high school scholars. Waco Foundation remains committed to offering exceptional service and care to help our students achieve their post-secondary aspirations.
